The federal Conservative Party’s next leader could be from Saskatchewan.
At a luncheon for the Regina Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, Regina MP Andrew Scheer said he’s seriously considering running for the party’s leadership.
Scheer was the Conservative’s House leader in the previous session, and said he thought it would be inappropriate for him to think about anything but doing his job. But since the spring session ended in the House, Scheer said he’s been approached by several colleagues and supporters to ask if he’s running for the leadership. He said he’s going to think about it this summer.
“I’m going to spend some time meeting with people from across the country and seeing if it’s the right decision for myself, my family, but ultimately for the party to be able to rebuild towards 2019.”
However, if he does become the party’s leader, Scheer said it would be no contest between he and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when it comes to who has the best hair.
“I will not ever try to compete with Justin Trudeau on a swagger level … I concede to him. He will always have better hair.”
Scheer is the Member of Parliament for Regina-Qu’Appelle, and he was the Speaker of the House when the Conservatives were in government.
