    It is expected bills will go down an average about $5 per month.

    The natural gas markets have been relatively stable allowing SaskEnergy some movement with price over the coldest months.
     

  • Fire at North Battleford Real Canadian Wholesale Club treated as suspicious

    Extensive damage to store in Frontier Mall

    Police say a fire Wednesday evening at North Battleford's Real Canadian Wholesale Club is being treated as suspicious.

    Shortly after 6 p.m. fire crews, RCMP, and WPD Ambulance were all called to Real Canadian Wholesale Club in Frontier Mall. The mall was evacuated as firefighters dealt with the fire, which was contained to the wholesale club. Speaking at the scene Wednesday evening, North Battleford Fire Chief Pat MacIsaac said the fire apparently started in some items in the store and not the structure itself.

  • Report presents array of options for Saskatoon's ailing Traffic Bridge

    Costs range from $4 to $60 million

    The City of Saskatoon now knows its options for the crumbling Traffic Bridge after the 103-year-old span was shut down following a failed structural inspection in August.

    Now, the report from Stantec Consulting Ltd. has come back detailing the best options and how much they cost. And nothing's free even tearing the bridge down and leaving an empty space will cost a few million dollars.

    The summarized options:

    - A complete repair of the bridge for all types of traffic at a cost of $27 million dollars.

  • Man being held in RCMP custody dies in Saskatoon hospital

    Investigators from B.C. called in

    A 32-year-old man from Brabant Lake who was under the watch of RCMP died in hospital in Saskatoon.

    The man was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

    Before ending up in hospital, RCMP say the man was being held at the La Ronge detachment for public intoxication.

    Investigators have been brought in from British Columbia to look into the circumstances around the man's death.

    His name is not being released at this time. Brabant Lake is about 170 km northeast of La Ronge.

  • Saskatoon man found guilty of assaulting newspaper reporter Bob Florence

    No date set for sentencing of Charles Elwood

    The man who beat StarPhoenix writer Bob Florence into a coma last winter on a Saskatoon street has been found guilty of aggravated assault.

    In a videotaped confession entered into evidence, Charles Elwood, 22, admitted to punching a man on Feb. 27 while he and his wife walked home from a bar. Both watched the man smash his head on the pavement, and then ran away.

    The guilty verdict was handed down early Wednesday evening at Saskatoon provincial court.

  • Fire damages Wholesale Club in North Battleford

    Mall evacuated, but no reports of injuries

    Fire forced the evacuation Wednesday evening of a North Battleford shopping mall.

    North Battleford fire chief Pat MacIsaac says their crews were called to the Real Canadian Wholesale Club in the Frontier Mall. The fire apparently started in some merchandise and not in the structure itself.

    "I think the fire damage is confined to a fairly small area," MacIsaac said as firefighters searched the store to ensure it was clear. "The water damage, however, is going to be pretty significant."

  • National Parole Board relaxes Robert Latimer's parole restrictions

    Wilkie-area farmer now able to leave halfway house for five days a week

    Robert Latimer is finally getting his wish as the National Parole Board relaxes some of his parole conditions.

    The Wilkie-area farmer took his disabled daughter's life in 1993 in what he calls a mercy killing.

    In a decision released Wendesday, Latimer will now be able to leave his Victoria halfway house for five days a week and spend that time in the community.

    Latimer has been asking for more time out of the halfway house for months. He's been living there since September 2008.

  • Prime Minister Stephen Harper to visit Saskatoon on Thursday

    Harper to mark 50th anniversary of Canadian Bill of Rights

    Prime Minister Stephen Harper will visit Saskatoon on Thursday to honour one of the legacies of John Diefenbaker.

    Harper will be at the Diefenbaker Canada Centre at the University of Saskatchewan to celebrate the preview showing of the Canadian Bill of Rights exhibit.

    Diefenbaker brought the Bill of Rights into existence as prime minister 50 years ago.

    Premier Brad Wall will join Harper at the U of S in the afternoon for an announcement.
