Should Sask Health Subsidize Chiropractic Services?

Its like a massage, It

Its like a massage, It doesn't really do anything for your health it just makes you feel better.

obviously you have never been to a chiropractor

If you had ever been to a chiropractor you would realize the ignorance of your comparison of a proper spinal adjustment to that of a massage.

Chiropractors provide a service that is truly needed!

It`s not like the people that use chiropractors have been getting
a free ride. We still have to pay for the service that is provided.

I think the Government is getting off cheap at the rate they pay, personally i think they should be paying for cost of the whole treatment not just half of it!

Spoken like someone who has

Spoken like someone who has never been to a chiropracter. It is not like a massage. Without monthly chiropractic treatments, I would not be walking upright. No massage therapy can do that for me.

Sask health subscidy for chiropractic services

Obviously these people in government haven't required a chiropractor service. When you can't get any help or answers, or just pills, you will end up at a chiropractor's office. In the past, I have personally had 2 chiropractor's in the same office that have known what my medical problem was before the specialist did. Then, in turn, I shared the info with the specialist and low & behold, the chiropractor was 100% correct. Chiropractor's hold a very important place in the community, leave the funding the way it is.

Regular chiropractic

Regular chiropractic treatment keeps me at work and not off sick or on WCB. If costs are too high for users, they will not go to the chiropractor and suffer needlessly.

I like the user pay option

I don't know of a case where someone has gone to a doctor appointment and taken out in a body bag, but there have literally been cases of this happening with people going to a chiropractic appointment, one being about 10 years ago in Saskatoon.
I know of someone who swears by chiropractors, yet he has to keep going back about once a month for an 'adjustment'. Are chiropractors actually solving the problem or just temporarily relieving the symptoms of a problem that they cannot solve?

Dying??

Are you kidding? You suggest the concern of going to chiropractors is death??? That is like saying you should never fly because the plane may crash. How many people see chiropractors every day, and how many die? That is a ridiculous statement. And many people have died after seeing a doctor. Chiropractors do incredible things for many peoples health and it is a strong part of great health care. A chiropractor is not your only doctor, he/she is an important part of overall healthy living.

Comparting chiropractic

Comparting chiropractic deaths to planes crash deaths is ridiculous. I have never gone into a doctor's office thinking that I may not come out alive.
The death of Laurie Jean Mathiason in Saskatoon is just one example of a chiropractic death. Can you give any example of a doctor's office visit that has resulted in death?

Are you for real?

For the person who asks for examples of a death by doctor, I can offer you many. How about my favorite uncle who kept going back to the doctor, who offered "the flu" as an explanation. In reality, it was lung cancer, which eventually killed him, unknown to a "professional" MD.

How about a cousin, who was seen by the same doctor 3 times, and told to go home, because he had "the flu". After this doctor went on vacation, and another one seen him, he was rushed by ambulance to the hospital. He didn't make it....his appendix burst on the way.

So......for you who makes ill-informed comments........be suspect the next time you go to the doctor, and he tells you that you have the flu......you might just be next......

Smarten-up!

Search for 'penn and teller

Search for 'penn and teller chiropractic' on youtube. Very interesting and very scary. I believe this will open some eyes. Working on minutes old babies - disgusting!

Are you saying you have

Are you saying you have never returned to a doctor or the dentist after just one visit? Also if you're taking medication you are istantly cured and never have to get it refilled again?

I have returned to a doctor

I have returned to a doctor or dentist after one visit, but not on a monthly basis for the same problem. Usually medication resolve a problem after a short time. My friend has been going to a chiropractor for the same issue for decades.

Most definitely Sask

Most definitely Sask Healthcare should subsidize chiropractic services! I would be in pain if I didn't go to my chiropractor to help relieve my headaches. Going to my doctor doesn't help as the medication prescribed doesn't work. It doesn't make any sense that my doctor gets paid by Sask Health for not helping but my chiropractor (who is also a doctor) may not even get subsidized...and what he does helps!

Confused

I guess I don’t understand the NDP opposition’s position. One hand they are telling the SaskParty government that they are fiscally mismanaging our government. Then in the next breath they are telling the government to spend money on things like chiropractors. I think it’s about time things like this are being cut keeping in mind that its only us and Manitoba that do help pay. This will force the Chiropractic association to become more competitive.

If you go by this logic I guess we should pay for dentists, physiotherapists, and other such benefits. I can hear them (NDP)now if the government decided to pay for these... which is it... spend more... spend less... make up your mind... I think the NDP need more practice at being opposition... maybe another 16 years or more.

Congratulations to the Wall Government!! You’re doing what should have been done that wasn’t during the last 16 years of government... actually spending money on infrastructure and less money on benefits like this.

I'm confused too.

How about we just go to user pay for all medical and medical related services? That would make the whole medical profession more competitive and improve over all health care services. (at least for some of us who can afford to pay).

Everyone is entitled to an

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Personal opinions should not dictate policy. Research should. All current research supports chiropractic care as superior to medical management of back pain. Research shows it is more cost effective, more therapeutically effective than any other types of care. Health care economists recommend more government involvement as it would save the health care system money. Whether u like it or not chiropractic continues to be a proven service that should be part of public health care in Saskatchewan.

Chiropractic

I herniated a disc in my neck after a fall at work. I spent 15 miserable weeks going to my hapless medical doctor and endless ineffective physiotherapy treatments. My medical specialists answer was risky surgery but being at the end of my rope I agreed.....what else was I suppose to do? As a last ditch attempt I saw a chiropractor. I had nearly complete relief of unrelenting pain after 4 adjustments!!! Why didn't my medical doctor refer me there, why didn't my specialist refer me there, why didn't my physio refer me there??? Drugs and especially surgery are not the only answers. How many people are walking around out there drugged for their pain or receiving unnecessary surgery? And as far as funding chiropractic services I ask you this....how much would it have cost to have neck surgery, $5000, $10000, $20000 more?

Don't stop funding this valuable service!

I voted no simply because

I voted no simply because most working people now have work insurance that does cover the cost of these things. Why should the government keep paying for someone who does go monthly to get adjusted??? Like any of our health care this service gets abused and used when not always necessary and it's costing our province alot of money. Luckily I haven't had to use their services but if I do my health plan will cover the cost.

Politics, scare tactics, and you...

I did work in health care economics and sociology in the past, and to the person talking about "body bags" they are obviously quite ignorant about safety and risks in health care. Medicine is necessary, but also is EXTREMELY RISKY. The risk of taking NSAIDS for back, joint or muscle pain, and having a cadiovascular incident is over 4%, according the the arthritis site. http://www.arthritis.org/cvd-nsaid.php I would suggest people do the math before posting stupid stuff on the internet.

The risk of serious problems from a chiropractor, physio, massage therapist working on your neck is very, very rare. 30 million treatments are done each year in Canada by licensed chiropractic doctors, and there are a small handful of alleged incidents. The "man bites dog" story seems to always be more memorable than the "dog bites man" story, unfortunately...

As far as economics of low back pain, medicine vs chiropractic, I believe economist P. Manga (Ontario (?)) did a ground-breaking story in the 1990's, google it and educate yourself.

Should be subsidized! my

Should be subsidized! my chiropractor has helped me recover from a past injury at work. I dont know how I would have been able to go back to work without his help of chiropractic visits. No pills or massages could have helped what my chiropractor did to recover my injury. thank-you.

Chiropractic Services

Its not like a massage at all. I've used these services many times over the years and it has helped me immensely.
Many times doctors have perscribed pills for a situation that a chiropractor fixed in one or two treatments.
Chiropractors are an important part of our health care system!

Alternative health valueable

I use the services of chiropractor regularly as well as a naturopathic doctor. I have had very good success with alternative health and has save the medical care many dollars over the years. I believe there is a place for the main stream Medical Doctors as well as Alternative health. I would prefer the Chiropractor cost be partially covered by sask Health, but at the same time the provincial budget needs to be balanced. This just make me be personally accountable for my own health, such as my Physical activity program, Healthy eating habits, etc. I believe that when things are free we tend to abuse the system or maybe not be as personnally accountable for our lifestyle. It is to bad the the government does not emphasis the importance of alternative health more. I have prevented a gall Bladder surgery, High Cholestole medication. Yes, it is difficult to excercise regularly and eat well, but the extra cost is well worth it. The Sask Party is being very responsible to this point in time, keep it up.

chiropractic services

As a user of chiropractic services,I can tell you that it is very important service and very much directly affects your health.Anyone who says otherwise has never been or has no idea what they are talking about. If I have a heart problem I go to a specialist who knows about hearts etc. etc. etc.I go to the chiropractor to get ribs that are out of place put back in or to relieve heartburn issues( no joke absolutely true) or relieving headaches because your spine in out of line.People have no idea how bones being where they are supposed to be affects your health in countless ways.Dr. Roy Pappish is the man to call if you want to validate my claims. He has been fixing me up 10-12 times a year for years.Don't take this service away from those who NEED it.
Thanks

Subsidize!

I don't want to inundate everyone with yet another anecdotal case, but I do feel I have some insight into this matter.

My fianceé has Spina Bifida Occulta, an incurable deformity of one of the vertebrae of her spine, and it causes her pain that pills cannot stop. Her spine can't completely bear her weight and there is no known cure for this problem. She goes to the chiropractor almost 3 times a week, and it helps, but 240 bucks a month is quite the expense. If that price goes up to almost 500 dollars a month, it will almost become unaffordable. These are not petty problems, and if sask health takes away coverage for this (and we can't buy into insurance to subsidize this cost) then she'll likely end up bedridden. I'm writing my MLA to get this subsidized and I hope for our sake that you will too.

Chiropractic care is

Chiropractic care is essential:
If you have never had to use the services of a chiropractor, you are very fortunate but you do not understand how important it is. I know first hand for myself and my daughter who had scoliosis of the spine
(thank God not as bad as some people) it was our chiropractor who found it and who relieved her of her pain which she had, had for 3 years in high school. If this service would not be subsidized we may not have been fortunate enough to afford the many treatments she needed.
There are a lot of people who do not have any health benefits, who need the help of the chiropractor and can not afford the full shot.
If you think our emergency rooms are full now, take away the help and look out.

dental health

If anything should be subsudized, i would rather it be dentists! Now, that to me is way more important than a crack.

I suspect the person who

I suspect the person who posted the comment that it is "like a massage" and doesn't really improve health has never had significant back problems to the point that you can barely walk into the Chiropractor's office, yet can move about freely after a chiropractic treatment. I can say without hesitation that my chiropractor has been able to do more for my health and in particular my back problems than any GP or medications. A person's health should include keeping a person pain free and upright!

Make it user pay,however

Make it user pay, however make it a tax deduction.

I use it several times a

I use it several times a year for severe back pain and it helps and provies relief. By using chiropracter services I'm not waiting for other health services which have a long wait list and cost more health dollars when I need immediate relief from a back injury which restricts movement and walking.
