A group representing Canada's post-secondary instructors is pleased to hear that the board of governors has been dissolved at the First Nations University.

James Turk, executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers, says the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is the only organization that can solve the problems plaguing the FNUC.

"They're the government for that university. They're the ones that passed the First Nations University Act, which set up the governance structure that has been the problem since 2005," Turk says.

Turk is optimistic that restructuring the FNUC's governance will cure its ails. He adds his association has been calling for the retooling of the governance structure for four years.

Turk suggests Thursday's decision is a godsend for FNUC faculty, which he says would've otherwise been left out on the street.

Once concrete steps are taken to implement the changes, the CAUT says it will be in a position to consider the possibility of lifting censure of the FNUC and to join the FSIN in lobbying the province to restore funding.
