Time For A New Flag?

Former chief of protocol wants Sask. flag changed

To many people, the Saskatchewan flag does a great job of representing this province. The green upper half symbolizes the northern forests. The yellow lower half is a nod to the southern wheat fields.

But former chief of protocol Michael Jackson says it's too busy. And apparently, the provincial shield and western red lily violate the rules of heraldry. So he says it's time for a change.

"I think that Saskatchewan deserves the best," Jackson says. "And unfortunately, in much of our symbolism in this province, we don't get the best. We settle for the mediocre. And the flag is a prime case."

Jackson says, from a distance, the shield in the top-left corner gets lost. He even suggests the western red lily looks a bit like a marijuana plant.

"I want this province to have a flag which is easily identifiable, makes sense, is heraldically correct, and looks good."

Jackson's idea for a new flag involves enlarging the shield, which contains a heraldic lion and three wheat sheaves. He believes many people are against an update simply because they're used to the current design.

But there's no need to immediately write your MLA. Jackson suggests politicians don't want to deal with the potential backlash of scrapping the flag.
