Construction sector sees small dip in jobs
While the construction sector is enjoying a warmer winter and a boom,
the latest labour survey showed construction jobs down.
It's just a
little bit, less than one per cent compared to January of 2011.
"I'm not
too concerned, but I would be concerned if it happened over a couple of months,"
said Michael Fougere, president of the Saskatchewan Construction Association.
"If this comes out and in the next report shows a drop again then we can
talk about it being a trend, but I wouldn't read too much into a snapshot of
time."
It could have less to do with the number of jobs available and
more to do with a chronic shortage of skilled tradesmen, he said.
But,
for those people currently at work, they are enjoying their current
situation.
"Oh, yes, it will mean that we get a lot more work done this
year," said Joe Marken at a Regina construction site.
