Heavy fog is responsible for two crashes on Saskatchewan highways this morning leaving one woman dead and another in hospital.

A 43-year-old woman died when a truck hit her car on Highway 48 east of Montmarte at 9 a.m. this morning.

RCMP said that heavy fog was definitely a factor in the crash which happened as she was trying to turn onto the highway. There is no word on the condition of the two men in the truck.

Earlier this morning heavy fog and an icy highway also played a roll in a three vehicle crash on Highway 33 southeast of Regina near Lajord.

A woman in a white SUV rear-ended a fuel truck which had stopped on the highway as it was making a left hand turn onto a grid read near Lajord. Then a flat bed truck crashed into the SUV.

The woman in the S-U-V was rushed to hospital in Regina and there is no word on her condition.
Both crash scenes are RCMP are warning drivers that there is still very poor visibility on Regina area highways and the fog is also depositing ice on highways making roadways very slippery. Both crash sites have been cleared and roads are open.

Highway Warnings

The Highway Hotline is also warning people to check their routes and be careful driving through fog hanging over the entire southeast half of the province in patches. Highways in the Regina, Weyburn, Yorkton and Wynyard are affected.

Amanda Meakin with the hotline said visibility clear on some stretches and very poor in others.

“It can go anywhere from two to 800 metres basically if it’s a sheltered area or if it’s a widespread open area it just depends how heavy the wind is blowing through,” said Meakin.

Drivers are encouraged to check the Highway Hotline before heading out.
