Saskatchewan history buffs can add two new places to their list of sites to see.

The Fish Lake Metis Settlement and the Moose Mountain Chalet and Cabins have been added to the list of protected heritage properties in the province. The designation of a heritage property comes with a plaque means the sites will be protected from future developments that could destroy them.

Carlos Germann with the Ministry of Tourism described the significance of the Fish Lake Metis settlement.

“This is a really unique example of an independent Metis community that was occupied from about 1945 to 1960,” Germann said.

He added that the Fish Lake settlement is an archaeological site and the cultural landscape helps people understand the Metis perspective.

In the southeast the cabins at Moose Mountain Provincial Park were built during the depression to create jobs.

“It’s an example of one of these relief projects that were designed to get men and women back to work during the great depression,” Germann explained.

The province has declared this Heritage Week in Saskatchewan, encouraging people to take the opportunity to delve into local history. All it takes is a quick visit to local museums across the province or simply taking a closer look at some of the signs posted along the highways.
