Holiday Monday is a great day to kick back and relax but if you want to get out of the house for Family Day you can check out a variety of activities around Regina.
The City of Regina's recreation facilities have extended their hours to help you out with entertaining kids of all ages. The Northwest Leisure Centre and the Sandra Schmirler Leisure Centre both have extended holiday hours from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Todd Girgulis with the city recommended another option as well.
“In a partnership with Skate Regina we have a Family Day skate 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Doug Wickenheiser Arena and it’s free and there’s hot chocolate and cookies,” Girgulis said.
If you would rather stay outside to enjoy the weather there are 42 outdoor rink sites in the city.
Regina Transit buses will be running on a Sunday schedule for the day with Paratransit services available from noon until 10:00 p.m. Garbage collection is going on as scheduled. City hall is closed along with art gallery and several neighbourhood centres. You can find out more on the City of Regina website.
The RCMP Heritage Centre is also hosting a variety of Family Day activities between noon and 5:00 p.m. Regular admission charges apply for the day which has a theme of arctic adventures.
Families can enjoy crafts and a scavenger hunt with prizes along with dog sled demonstrations and a maple sugar shack. The heritage centre will also run special presentations called “protecting the north” and they will have special viewings of the SCN series “Courage in Red” about remote policing.
The heritage centre was a very busy place for families on the holiday afternoon as kids of all ages enjoyed building crafts like miniature inukshuks to fit with the northern theme, meeting sled dogs and touring the displays at the museum.
Marlene Jackson was happy to spend an extra day in February with her family.
"It's nice to have an extra day to spend with the family and just to do some fun stuff together that we wouldn't normally get to do on a weekday," she said, adding that after touring the heritage centre they might take the kids out cross-country skiing.
Rhonda Girard was also at the centre and she said the extra day off is a good chance to get out with the kids and make the most of the day.
For more information on admission and activities check the RCMP Heritage Centre website.
