Saskatchewan is looking good after a nationwide report on nursing numbers, with the highest increase in registered nurses of any province over a recent four year period.

While the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses is saying we're on the right track, they maintain we're still teetering on the edge of trouble.

Union president Rosalee Longmoore said 300 vacancies remain in the system, and 2,000 nurses are ready to retire.

"We could be right back into a huge nursing shortage in this province if we don't make sure that we're retaining every nurse that we can," she said.

She said the problem is a missing generation, caused by lay offs in the 90's.

"We have the large number that are nearing or at the age of retirement, and then we have a very young work force at the other end."

There has been a fear of nurses leaving for work in Alberta, but Longmoore said their most recent contract has helped bridge a wage gap.
