Leading up to Saskatchewan’s hunting season, new hunting regulations come into effect Wednesday.
The Wildlife Amendment Act, 2015 will have harsher penalties for those who break existing hunting laws. For example, serious offences will come with an automatic two-year suspension, and those convicted of three separate offences will be banned for life.
More than 70,000 people hunt in Saskatchewan each year. Under the new act, people with hunting bans in other jurisdictions will not be allowed to purchase a hunting license in the province. This also extends to anyone with outstanding fines.
“This new legislation enhances wildlife protection and shows greater respect for our natural resources by increasing the severity of penalties for those who commit hunting violations,” said Environment Minister Herb Cox.
He added, “Saskatchewan’s valuable wildlife resource needs to be protected and preserved for future generations to enjoy.”
