Police find gun after North Central standoff, 1 man arrested

One man is in custody after police found a gun when they were called to Regina’s North Central neighbourhood.

Around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, police were dispatched to a home on the 1000 block of Retallack Street. Police were told a man had entered the home with a firearm.

Schools in the area were notified and entered secure the building mode and a controlled release of students to their parents and caregivers was carried out.

Officers set up a perimeter around the home, and members of the crisis negotiations team communicated with them through a window. Shortly after a woman left the home while the man refused to come out and threatened to harm himself.

Before the SWAT team arrived, the man left the house with a beer in hand and a police dog was released helping to bring him down. The gun was seized. Officers made the arrest around 4 p.m.

WITNESS REACTIONS

Michael Baumet grew up in the area and saw the incident unfold through the afternoon. He said this was the second time this kind of incident took place in the past two weeks.

“When I was younger it didn’t happen a lot but now I see it happening more often than not,” he told 980 CJME.

Celina Roche has lived in the area for three years and says she’s glad police have a presence in the neighbourhood.

“It was nice to see the police out in full force, we like that because it’s good to see that they’re doing their job out here and that kids and people will know they can’t go break the law.”

The investigation is ongoing and police haven’t said if charges have been laid.
