13,000 families were fed because of the Pack the Cruiser fundraiser last year. This year, RCMP and the Regina Police service want to help feed even more.
The second annual event has RCMP cadets and the Regina police at the Sherwood CO-OP on Albert Street with their cruisers open for non-perishable food donations.
Regina police Staff Sergeant Jeff Wagner said it’s a great event that has a bit of healthy competition.
“Well, you know, they have the lights lit up on their cruisers and they have their recruits and more officers here,” Wagner said. “I think throughout the day we’ll (Regina police) be equal with donations.”
Regina Food Bank CEO Steve Compton said the partnership with the policing agencies couldn’t come at a better time.
“Summer is a challenging time of year for us for food supplies,” he said. “So with the RCMP and the Regina city police coming together at the Sherwood Co-op, the trucks are fairly full already. We’re hoping that we can meet last year’s number of 4,500 pounds of food.”

Compton added the food donated will go towards summer feeding programs, families in need, and kids summer programs.
“On an average day, the food bank serves about 200 families,” said Compton. “It’s about 8,500 individuals reaching out for support in a month and this allows us to meet that goal.”
Prepared grocery bags to donate can be purchased inside the Co-op for five and 10 dollars.
