Saskatchewan residents helped kids around the world a little bit more this holiday season.
Samaritan’s Purse Canada has shared its annual breakdown of shoeboxes packed by each province during its Operation Christmas Child campaign.
The fundraiser happens each year around the holiday season and encourages people to help donate shoeboxes filled with clothing, toys and hygiene items to be sent around the world to children who might not otherwise receive a Christmas gift.
Frank King, the news media relations manager for the organization, said Saskatchewan residents packed 20,701 shoeboxes — a nine per cent increase over the 19,004 packed the previous year.
More than 4,000 of those boxes came from Saskatoon — a 24 per cent increase over 2022. Regina residents packed 2,309 shoeboxes.
Children in Costa Rica were among those to receive the shoeboxes.
During the most-recent campaign, Operation Christmas Child collected more than 11 million boxes total, with 425,209 of those being packed in Canada.
