Another storm set to barrel through Carlyle has the town’s mayor concerned.
The town is preparing to be hit with a third spring thunderstorm late Tuesday afternoon in under a week.
Southeast Saskatchewan has been pelted with multiple storms over the weekend, but Environment Canada said the one expected to arrive late Tuesday afternoon could be the “worst one yet.”
Mayor Jenn Sedor said she was encouraging other members in the community to keep patio furniture put away and emergency kits at the ready.
“I think everyone is really on edge today,” she said. “I’m hoping that we take that as advanced warning to do some good prep.”
Sedor said if the storm missed the town – which is 200 kilometres southeast of Regina – that would be welcomed.
“We’re all feeling very frustrated with the weather right now,” she said.
Sendor said strong winds toppled trees and damaged minor infrastructure on Sunday.
“We really weren’t expecting the straight line winds that came through … and the trees were bending, and then all of a sudden they were breaking and uprooting,” she said. “That’s kind of when everyone realized that we were in the thick of it, once again, for the second day in a row.”
Sedor said power poles fell over and a transformer exploded near a building in the height of the storm.
“It really lit up the sky for a moment,” she said. “Kind of everyone was holding their breath as to what just went on.
“Half of the town was without power for pretty much a full day.”
Sedor said the sign at the Co-op Cardlock came crashing down and the town’s spray park tables and shade stands were damaged.
There was more wind damage than flooding damage, Sedor said, so she wasn’t considering filing any provincial disaster assistance paperwork.
Other communities like Kipling did consider applying for disaster relief due to severe flooding.
“We’re all pretty fatigued in our community,” she said. “We just kind of sustained damage from a wind storm a couple weeks ago and roofs had just been repaired and siding had been patched. So, here we are again, cleaning up for a second time, and now today, potentially a third.”
