“He was happy and he was healthy and he still had so much life to live,” Marina said in an interview Thursday, “and you know all those things that you look forward to, teaching them how to drive a car and graduation and their first girlfriend and their first dance and … it’s gone. It’s all over now.

“I was very proud of my son. I am very proud of my son. I considered myself to be a good mother and now I don’t have anyone to mother.”

Henry Losco, 11, died Dec. 19 when carbon monoxide leaked into their apartment at Albert Street and 11th Avenue in downtown Regina. His father, Sergio, was left very ill by the same leak and was treated in hospital.

The family had just moved to Regina from Newfoundland two weeks earlier. Around noon Dec. 19, Marina left for work but left behind her personal phone to help get the unit’s internet hooked up.

“I started calling at about 20 minutes past three, and there was no answer. I called twice, and I thought that was strange, because I always get a call back if my call isn’t answered, and Sergio didn’t call back. So I just had a funny feeling,” she remembers.

“But being at a new job and needing to be there and learn everything I need to learn, I kind of put it out of my head.”

After trying three more times to reach them, she left work around 7:45 that evening. She recalls being surprised that no one was at the door to greet her when she got home.

“My son has boundless energy. He’s got so much energy, he could never just quite stand still. And Sergio always takes my work bag. And nobody was there, and the apartment was quiet.”

It was Sergio who she found first, on the kitchen floor struggling to breathe. Henry was in his bed, face down, unresponsive.

The events that followed, Marina doesn’t clearly remember. But she was able to get Henry into the hallway and a neighbour took over performing CPR on him while Marina went back in and dragged Sergio into the hall as well.

With Sergio breathing, Marina and the neighbour continued with CPR on Henry until EMS arrived.

Keeping Henry’s memory alive through awareness

Marina says she relives that horrible night – even when her eyes are closed.

“What happened to me that night has truly and deeply affected me in a way that I don’t have words to describe,” she said, as she and Sergio sat in the living room of their new apartment.

Sergio said he is feeling better physically, following treatment in Regina and Edmonton. Marina remains on a leave of absence from her job.

“I guess as a way to keep me going and not just sit in a dark room and cry, I have started carbon monoxide awareness,” Marina said, “because if I could save, or Henry could save, another child’s life or another family, then he would have done something good.

“We’ve decided to talk to the media because we want to share this story so no other family goes through this. Carbon monoxide is silent, it’s deadly, and we implore everyone to check your alarms regularly, to test them and to replace the batteries.”

Shortly before the interview, Marina and Sergio had been visited by the fire chief and fire marshal.

“They have ensured us that they are taking this very seriously,” Marina said. “And we appreciate that very much, and we appreciate that they took the time to come here and to let us know.”

At a news conference the following day, Fire Chief Layne Jackson told reporters the investigation at the scene had concluded, with a finding that the carbon monoxide leak was unintentional.

A boiler was found as the cause. Jackson said it failed and released a “substantial” amount of carbon monoxide into some suites. He added the building was quickly ventilated and is now safe.

The investigation is continuing, with the involvement of Regina police and the Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan.

“We want answers,” Marina said, “but we are patient and we are willing to wait for them.”

Remembering Henry

Sergio explains the family moved to Canada from Italy in 2020 to give Henry the best education possible.

“We always tried to find a better opportunity for him in our travels around Canada,” he said. “We’d always just get him open to the world and to knowledge. And he was such a sponge. He would always learn everything, and he will always have questions.

“He was just an amazing kid and the void that he has left, it’s just unbelievable.”

Among the things Henry loved were soccer, playing the trumpet, and chess.

“He started playing chess at a very young age. It was only a couple months after he started playing that I could no longer beat him anymore, or his dad,” Marina said.

It was soccer that forged a connection between Henry and his best friend in Newfoundland, Misha.

“At times they played on rivalry soccer teams, soccer clubs. So it was, it was nice to see the competitiveness between them, but it was also nice to see Henry have such a wonderful friend,” she said.

“They would play for hours online. They would play Brawl Stars. And Sergio and I used to say it was like having another another child, because we heard Misha for hours and hours almost every day.”

As they continue to grieve their son, Marina and Sergio are keeping Misha in their thoughts as well. Marina was preparing a care package for him, with the Christmas gifts they had bought for Henry.

“They’ve been friends since they first met. It was instant in grade four, so I’m sure that he’ll appreciate the things that we were supposed to give Henry.”

Denied a Christmas and a future with Henry, there will just be the memories of a son who had, as Marina puts it, “so much life left to live.”

The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

EVAN BRAY: Yesterday, we found that there were charges laid. This was such a tragic incident, a 19-year-old female was standing in a bus shelter and was killed by a vehicle when the vehicle went off the road, hit her. Charges were laid yesterday. What can you tell us about what’s happened between the accident and those charges being laid?

LORILEE DAVIES: Absolutely, yeah, just a horrible tragedy. Our investigators, who were out on the scene and have done the follow-up work, have been so diligent about collecting all the evidence, all the information they can. They put together a very substantial package. They sent it to the Crown. The Crown approved the laying of a charge for dangerous driving causing death. And I really have to give kudos to our ICART team, which is our Investigative Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team, the work that they did at the scene and then back in the office, putting everything together to put together that investigative package was nothing short of outstanding. And I know for the family, that will be very meaningful to know that there are criminal charges laid in this case.

What do you say, Chief, to the people that say, why did it take so long? The incident happened, it was a vehicle, went off the road, hit this innocent person. Many people would say this seems cut and dried.

DAVIES: I would think there would be no argument that there could potentially be a Traffic Safety Act charge. But when we’re thinking criminal charges, that threshold for evidence and having enough to put together a criminal case is really a high standard. And so at the scene, they’re taking literally hundreds of measurements, they’re analyzing the roadway, they’re examining the vehicles that were involved, and then mapping that all out when they get back to the office. And so, it really does take a long time to put together all of those pieces of information, to put together a solid case for court.

Yesterday, the Regina Police Service had their annual monthly meeting with the Board of Police Commissioners. I know, Chief Davies, in those meetings, you provide an update on current crime stats. How did we end the year in 2025, what are we looking forward to, or what are challenging us here in ’26?

DAVIES: Absolutely. So, in terms of overall crime stats, 2025 was quite a good year for the Regina Police Service. We ended up, both crimes against the person and crimes against the property, with over a 15 per cent decrease. And I think when we’re thinking those double digits, that is significant and substantial. And so, you know, I’m very proud of that. Unfortunately, we did have 11 homicides last year. And as you know, one in our community is too many. And so that certainly was an issue that is concerning when we have that level of violence. I am pleased to report that we did lay charges in all 11 of those homicides. And so hopefully the fact that we’re holding offenders accountable is some solace to victims’ families. And then the other pressure point, and it has been all throughout 2025, was arsons. They increased at the end of the year, we were up eight per cent, which I would say at the start of the year, we were up double digits, and so we did make some inroads on that, but the majority of those are bin fires. They’re hard for us to catch people in the act. They’re often viewed by many as sort of a victimless crime, but they still are something that can escalate to cause property damage and potentially loss of life.

I want to go back to the homicides for a second. People would want to know what is behind these murders. Often it was domestic issues, drug issues, gangs. Can you speak to, if you reflect on 2025 murders, was it those same kind of overarching elements that were at play on the 2025?

DAVIES: Yeah, exactly. There isn’t one specific thing that we’ve got to focus energy in this direction. It really is all three that you mentioned, domestics, gangs and drug involvement. We have investigative units that work, especially in the gang space and drug space, and they are working very hard to get out of our community the people that we know are most violent. So that work continues.

Australian media are reporting that a young Canadian woman has been found dead, her body surrounded by a pack of dingoes, on an island popular with backpackers and other tourists and off the country’s east coast.

Police in the Australian state of Queensland say they were told about the body of the 19-year-old victim around 6:35 a.m. local time on Monday, when officers were called to a beach on K’gari, also known as Fraser Island.

Police Inspector Paul Algie told reporters the body had been “interfered” with by the pack of about 10 dingoes, but it wasn’t known if she had drowned or been killed by the wild dogs.

A Queensland Police news release says the body was found north of the Maheno shipwreck on the island’s eastern side, and initial information suggests she may have gone for a swim around 5 a.m.

It says a crime scene has been established and investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. says the victim had been spotted by two men driving along the beach, while 9 News Australia says the victim had been staying with a fellow Canadian on the island.

Global Affairs Canada and the RCMP did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

K’gari, a World Heritage Area popular with tourists along the Queensland coast, is known for its population of wild dingoes, with the Queensland government warning visitors to be “dingo safe.”

There has been a series of attacks on the island, including the fatal mauling of nine-year-old Clinton Gage in 2001.

“Some K’gari dingoes are habituated to people and may approach you,” the government video warns.

It tells people to keep children close and carry a “safety stick,” saying it’s important not to give dingoes food because “they may become aggressive towards people in search of it.”

Australia’s most notorious dingo attack was the death of two-month-old Azaria Chamberlain in central Australia in 1980.

A family spokesman confirmed her death Friday. The Dionne Quints Home Museum in North Bay, Ont., says in a social media post that Annette died Christmas Eve, but did not provide further details.

“She believed it was important to maintain the Dionne Quints Museum and the history it provides for the future of all children,” the museum said in the post Friday.

“Annette was the only surviving Quints and was the last surviving sibling amongst the 14 children of the Dionne family … Rest in Peace, Annette.”

Annette and her sisters — Emilie, Yvonne, Cécile and Marie — became an instant global sensation from the moment of their birth in the Ontario community of Corbeil on May 28, 1934, as they became the first quintuplets known to survive past infancy.

They were hailed as a salve to the gloom of financial austerity during the Great Depression and became a source of international fascination at a time when multiple births were considered a rarity.

But the sisters said their childhood in the public eye came at extreme personal cost.

When the quintuplets were only months old, the Ontario government took them away from their cash-strapped parents, who already had five children.

THE CANADIAN PRESS

Across the street from the family home, the government put them in a nursery-style exhibition called Quintland, where millions of curious tourists lined up to observe the girls sitting in a closed compound through one-way glass, pouring an estimated $500 million into the northern Ontario economy.

The attraction became so popular that it played a role in beginning the expansion of the route between Toronto and North Bay to a four-lane highway to accommodate the flood of tourists coming to visit the quintuplets.

Hollywood made movies about the girls, and companies such as Kellogg’s and Palmolive made them their ambassadors. Five identical ships were named after the sisters during the Second World War.

Front row (left to right) Cecile and Yvonne, and back row (left to right) Marie, Emilie and Annette. THE CANADIAN PRESS/CP

Once the quintuplets were 18 years old, they moved to Montreal and out of the public eye. Emilie died in August 1954, followed by Marie in 1970.

In 1998, the three remaining quintuplets received a $4-million settlement from the Ontario government after raising concerns about the alleged mismanagement of a trust fund set up to provide for their future.

Three years later, one of the sisters, Yvonne, died of cancer.

In a 2019 interview with The Canadian Press, Annette and her sister Cécile, who died in July, reflected on their time on display, and said parents must view childhood as a precious time that should not be exploited for profit.

“It can cause lots of damage,” Annette said. “Children need help and love, and everything we can give them.”

As they aged, the media-shy sisters worked to put their complicated childhood behind them, only returning to the public eye to make sure their past was recognized and the misfortune they endured wasn’t repeated.

“I realize that many times bad things (happened) because money was the big question,” Annette said in 2019. “It’s very hard to fight against it.”

As social media was ushering in a new era of childhood stardom with so-called kidfluencers — paid to promote products in sponsored videos and posts — Annette expressed unease.

“The children should be sure of their choice to become a star,” Annette said from her Montreal home in 2019. “They need lots of understanding and advice.”

The Dionne quintuplets’ family home has since been moved from its original site and transformed into a museum in North Bay, Ont., where dozens of photos and memorabilia are displayed to commemorate the family’s legacy.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 26, 2025.

“It’s the great work of emergency crews out there (that) limited this incident from becoming worse,” he said.

“The quick response and that diligence of those crews out there to quickly identify that there was a dangerous environment and start to move folks out. They really did save a lot of lives that evening,” Jackson said at a news conference.

Jackson was unable to provide the age of the person who died, or the injured person, but he was able to confirm the building had working CO alarms.

The source of the CO was found on Friday night.

“What we’ve been able to confirm … is that there was some mechanical work being done in the building on some of the service equipment.

“That piece of service equipment was identified as the source of the carbon monoxide release and firefighters, along with gas inspectors, were able to isolate it and shut it down,” he said.

He doesn’t believe the incident was deliberate.

“The investigation is still ongoing … we have investigators on the scene. They need to have some time to complete their work.”

In a post on X, Regina Fire said firefighters were on scene alongside paramedics, SaskEnergy and Regina Police Service. At that time, authorities said residents would not be allowed to return until the source is confirmed and the building — Metro 1827 apartments — was deemed safe.

During the response, police said crews detected dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and upgraded the incident to include the Hazardous Materials Team.

“As this incident involved a fatality, a multi-agency investigation is underway, including Regina Fire & Protective Services, Regina Police Service, Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service,” the City of Regina said in a news release Monday.

Anderson Builders Group website says 69 residential units were built there in 2018.

As of 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, all impacted residents were cleared to return to their homes.

Reminder to have carbon monoxide detector in homes

“Regina Fire & Protective Services urges all residents to ensure they have a working carbon monoxide detector in their home,” the city said.

“Saskatchewan regulations require carbon monoxide detector in all homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages. Detectors must be installed outside each sleeping area and on every level that contains a fuel-burning appliance.

“Test your carbon monoxide detector regularly, replace batteries as needed, and never ignore an alarm. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly. A functioning detector is the best way to protect yourself and your family.”

Regina Fire Marshal Randy Ryba told CJME News last year that carbon monoxide is a silent killer.

“It’s about the same buoyancy as air, so it moves through the house. It’s odourless, colourless, and our call volumes go up dramatically in the heating season,” he said.

Provincial regulations require CO alarms in every residential structure in the province, with one CO alarm on every level of a home, and a CO alarm within 16 feet of all bedroom doors.

Even though you can’t smell or see the gas, there are some very noticeable signs you have been exposed to it.

Acute exposure can lead to long-term neurological effects such as cognitive and behavioural changes.

Chronic exposure to low concentrations of CO can lead to lethargy, headaches, nausea, and flu-like symptoms and, in a worst case scenario, severe exposure can ultimately lead to unconsciousness, coma, and death.

It’s recommended that people change out their carbon monoxide alarms every eight to 10 years.

According to a police statement, officers said the initial investigation “has determined the boy left a residence on the Ochapowace First Nation on foot around 5:00 p.m., destined for another residence in the community.”

Someone who was passing by the area found the boy’s body just before 8 p.m., several hundred metres from the original residence, noted police.

After the initial investigation and consulting with RCMP Major Crimes, the Mounties said, at this time, the boy’s sudden death is not considered suspicious.

Police said an autopsy by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service must be conducted to confirm the boy’s cause of death.

“We understand there is conversation happening locally and at this time the RCMP cannot confirm whether or not the boy’s death was the result of an animal mauling, if weather or another element was a factor,” added the Broadview RCMP in a statement.

The Mounties are asking the public to refrain from any vigilante action towards animals.

“Pending autopsy results, the appropriate authorities will determine next steps, if any, to mitigate any concerns,” noted police.

The RCMP did not release any other identifying details about the boy at this time.

“The RCMP offers our deepest condolences to the boy’s family and the community at large during this very difficult time.”

In an update issued on Dec. 24, the RCMP said the cause of the boy’s death has not yet been confirmed, but an investigation by the Saskatchewan Coroners Service confirmed that the death was not suspicious.

“The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is investigating to determine cause of death,” the RCMP said in a statement. “As this is considered a sudden death investigation with no criminal element, the police do not have any other information to provide, and we don’t anticipate further updates.”

Ochapwace Nation leaders offer condolences

The kakisiwew-ochapwace Nation’s Office of the Chief and Councill offered their “deepest condolences to the family during this heartbreaking time. Our hearts are with them as they grieve the tragic loss of a young boy whose life was beginning,” said a statement.

The “horrific” incident has “deeply shaken our community,” said the First Nation leaders.

The notice also recognized that this loss has a “profound impact on many.”

In the statement, the management team offered mental health and crisis support to those who need it.

“Moving forward, information will be prepared on measures to help prevent future incidents and strengthen our community’s safety.”
