A Saskatchewan RCMP officer had a near miss during a traffic stop on Highway 1 near Grand Coulee this weekend.

After conducting a traffic stop on Saturday afternoon in the eastbound lanes of the highway, the officer was walking back to his vehicle when he saw a semi travelling at highway speeds and heading directly towards him, not moving into the passing lane, Saskatchewan RCMP in a statement issued on March 2.

The officer jumped into the ditch just as the semi hit his police vehicle.

RCMP said the police vehicle was significantly damaged but the officer was not physically injured.

Police said the vehicle’s emergency lights were on, the on-duty officer was wearing his uniform and the police vehicle was correctly parked.

The semi stopped and the officer issued the driver a ticket for driving without due care and attention and another for driving without reasonable consideration for others. The semi driver was also not injured.

“Had this incident happened only moments earlier, the outcome could have been far more tragic, which is a terrifying thought,” S/Sgt. Jason Sauve, with Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services, said in the release.

RCMP added that drivers need to slow down to 60 km/h when passing emergency vehicles that have their lights activated, such as EMS, fire, and police vehicles, as well as tow trucks, and highway workers.

Drivers should also move their vehicles into the passing lane if possible.

A 57-year-old Regina man is facing a massive list of charges in connection with a series of break-ins spanning seven years in dozens of communities around Saskatchewan.

Police said a probe into a series of property crimes was launched in May of 2025, and officers identified 74 break-ins that they believed to be connected.

“These reports occurred in 43 communities and the surrounding areas in southern Saskatchewan between September 2019 and February 2026,” the RCMP said in a statement.

“It was determined that a cumulative total of approximately $50,000 cash had been stolen. Other items that had been stolen included debit/credit cards, gift cards, alcohol, antique coins, and other various items.”

Police said the break-ins happened between September of 2019 and this month at businesses, town offices, post offices and community centres, but at this stage police do not believe any homes were affected.

The Regina man is now facing 61 charges of breaking and entering, 12 charges of attempted breaking and entering with intent, one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday in Regina.

“This may not be a violent crime, but it’s crime that is extremely damaging to those communities who lost valuables and funds and felt their safety has been compromised,” inspector Jill McLaren, with the Saskatchewan RCMP’s South District, said in a statement.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work done by our team for working together, connecting the dots, laying charges, and restoring a sense of security for these communities.”

The Mounties asked anyone with information about the string of break-ins, or anyone who was a victim of a break-in and didn’t previously report it, to contact the RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.

The RCMP said the break-ins happened in or near the following communities:

The Supreme Court of Canada says there can be an exception to a lawyer’s duty to keep conversations with a client confidential when the lawyer needs the information to defend themselves against a criminal charge.

In a 7-2 ruling today, the top court says a lawyer can invoke an “innocence at stake” exception when they seek access to their client’s privileged communications for use in their own defence.

The decision comes in the case of Regina criminal defence lawyer Sharon Fox, whose phone conversation with a client was recorded under a wiretap authorization in an RCMP investigation into cocaine trafficking.

A judge ruled the first portion of the call was not protected by solicitor-client privilege and could be accessed by the RCMP, but said a second portion of the call was privileged and could not be accessed by anyone — including the lawyer — without a further order from the court.

Based on the first portion of the call, Fox was charged with obstruction of justice over claims that she warned her client about possible police searches and that she advised the client to remove or destroy evidence.

The judge ruled Fox could not invoke the “innocence at stake” exception to access her client’s privileged communications for use in her own defence, but also excluded the non-privileged part of the call from evidence to prevent an unfair trial, leading to the lawyer’s acquittal.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 6, 2026.

Maidstone RCMP responded to the call on Dec. 28 at around 9:13 p.m.

The investigation determined that at around 9 p.m. that night, three unknown people drove onto the property in a light-coloured pickup truck. The homeowner came outside to talk to the people in the truck.

RCMP in the Northwest Territories have issued a response to concerns raised following the Dec. 14 arrest of a wanted suspect, 25-year-old Elias Schiller.

The statement says Schiller was wanted on outstanding warrants when he was stopped by police on the side of Highway 3, near the small community of Behchokǫ̀.

Police say that after giving a false name and refusing to leave his vehicle, officers were forced to use a conducted energy weapon and pepper spray on Schiller to gain compliance.

Despite the frigid temperature of -30 degrees Celsius, the Mounties say Schiller repeatedly refused to get up from the ground and get into the police vehicle voluntarily, resulting in severe frostbite.

Following the arrest, Dene National Chief George Mackenzie issued a statement accusing the Mounties of excessive force and perpetuating systemic racism.

In the media release, the Yellowknife RCMP refuted the allegations made by the National Chief and invited him to meet in order to review available evidence, such as body-worn camera footage, and to establish a better framework for communication to avoid future misunderstandings.

A British Columbia Mountie convicted of discreditable conduct for making sexist comments in group chats has been ordered to resign within 14 days, or he will be fired.

RCMP adjudicator Louise Morel said the actions of Coquitlam Const. Ian Solven were a “fundamental breach of the public trust” and that allowing him to remain an officer would damage the reputation of the RCMP.

“It defies comprehension how a police officer sworn to serve and protect the public would think that posting vulgar, sexualized and offensive comments … was acceptable or tolerable,” she said.

“Police officers hold an elevated position in the community, and as such, there’s a higher expectation placed on them. They are the keepers of the community trust. They must respect the law, their duty and themselves. If not their behaviour taints the reputation of the police service.”

In November, Morel found constables Solven, Mersad Mesbah and Philip Dick failed to treat people with respect and courtesy and committed discreditable conduct when they posted racist, sexist, and homophobic comments in a group chat with other officers and on police computer terminals.

The fate of the two others officers will be handed down in the new year.

In her decision on Thursday, Morel said that on the RCMP communications system Solven described a naked woman in a shelter as his entertainment, characterized maternity leave as the RCMP vacation plan for female members, and called colleagues retarded.

In the group chat, Solven “made use of pejorative terms for female colleagues, homophobic remarks, and comments which body-shamed female colleagues,” she said

She referenced messages including one where Solven referred to a sexual assault victim as “a dumb girl.”

“Const. Solven took an oath to serve and protect the public, and he put aside the oath to degrade members of the public, vulnerable persons and colleagues by posting vulgar, racist and degrading comments, thereby violating the public trust,” she said.

The hearing heard that Solven had been on the job three and a half years before he was suspended with pay after a complaint was filed in 2021.

Morel said she was not convinced by Solven’s lawyer’s argument that there was a minimal likelihood of recidivism if he remained a police officer, pointing out that “his misconduct took place over the majority of his service.”

Morel said Solven had abandoned several of the essential core values of the force and his actions constitute a fundamental breach of the public trust.

“The seriousness of this misconduct is so egregious that further damage to the reputation of the RCMP would be too great if Const. Solven was permitted to remain on the force,” she said.

The lawyer representing the RCMP conduct authority argued previously that Solven should be dismissed outright or be given a direction to resign in 14 days.

Solven’s lawyer said his client was remorseful and accepted responsibility and that measures short of dismissal, such as a loss of pay, were appropriate.

Solven previously testified that he was proud to be an RCMP member, while acknowledging he failed to live up to the force’s expectations and its core values. He told the hearing earlier this month that he “truly regrets” his actions.

He blamed his behaviour on his frustrations and personal issues, which got to a point where he was “taking cheap shots” at co-workers.
