Some students are heading back to classes in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., just over two weeks after an 18-year-old shooter killed eight people, including six at the local secondary school, before turning the gun on herself.

A message to parents posted on the Peace River South school district website says elementary students are returning to classes with shortened days today and tomorrow, with their regular schedules set to resume on Monday.

The district says portables set up on the elementary school grounds will open for secondary students and their families to visit today, and those students may attend class for one course on Friday.

It says the “tentative plan” for next week will be for secondary students to go to school from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but “this may change based on needs.”

The district says a security company has been contracted to maintain a perimeter around the Tumbler Ridge Elementary campus, while RCMP have conducted a security review of the area and a camera system is to be installed.

The message says the two doors on each portable will be locked at all times and the elementary school doors will also be locked throughout the day.

Two “safer school liaison” staff will be at the site until the spring break, along with a district counselling team, says the message posted online on Wednesday.

Jesse Van Rootselaar shot and killed her mother and half-brother at their home in Tumbler Ridge on Feb. 10, before going to the secondary school and killing five students and an educational assistant, then taking her own life.

Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot in the head Wednesday on Day 2 of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown on the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Minnesota has become a political flashpoint with U.S. President Donald Trump’s continued jabs at Gov. Tim Walz — former vice-president Kamala Harris’s 2024 running mate — and derogatory remarks towards the state’s Somali population.

Trump last month called the Somali population “garbage” following a federal investigation into COVID-19 and medical aid fraud connected to organizations serving Somali immigrants and others.

Saleban Duale, who goes by Sal, says the mistakes of a few don’t reflect the whole community and the Somali population has contributed greatly to Minnesota.

He says members of different Somali organizations intend to hold a vigil to honour Good this afternoon at the location where she was killed.

The shooting death has rattled the community as more than 2,000 ICE officers descended on the area in what the Department of Homeland Security described as the biggest immigration enforcement operation ever. The Somali population is in ICE’s sights after Trump attempted to use the fraud investigation to frame the state as a hotbed of government fraud.

Trump claimed last month that Somalis “contribute nothing” and “we don’t want them in our country.”

He’s repeatedly made crude statements about Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, who is Somali. The president has said he would end temporary protected status for Somalis in Minnesota.

The controversy further spiralled last month after a conservative influencer posted unconfirmed claims that that daycare centres run by Somalis in Minneapolis were also committing fraud and didn’t have any children registered.

Trump’s administration Tuesday said it would withhold funds for programs that support needy families with children in five Democratic-led states over concerns about fraud, including Minnesota.

It’s a difficult situation for the Somali community, Duale said, describing the population as large with many people under the age of 30.

“For the community, I think we’ve kind of gotten numb to it,” Duale said. “We know we are not fraudsters. We know how much we contribute.”

He’s part of a collective called Somali Neighbours, which makes clothing and other accessories to show visible support for their community.

Duale noted that they are not the only minority group to be targeted, pointing to Trump’s debunked claims about Haitians during his presidential campaign.

“We are not the only one … It is our moment to carry this burden,” Duale said. “He is targeting all minority communities.”

Adding fuel to the fire was another shooting on the west coast, where federal immigration agents in Oregon shot and wounded two people in a vehicle outside a Portland hospital.

The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday the vehicle’s passenger was “a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring” who was involved in a recent shooting in the city.

When agents identified themselves during a “targeted vehicle stop” in the afternoon, the driver tried to run them over, the department said in a statement.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minneapolis was on edge Thursday following the fatal shooting of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer taking part in the Trump administration’s latest immigration crackdown, with the governor calling for people to remain calm and schools canceling classes and activities as a safety precaution.

State and local officials demanded ICE leave the state after 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good was shot in the head. But Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said agents are not going anywhere.

The Department of Homeland Security has deployed more than 2,000 officers to the area in what it says is its largest immigration enforcement operation ever. Noem said more than 1,500 people have been arrested.

Macklin Good’s killing Wednesday morning in a residential neighborhood south of downtown was recorded on video by witnesses, and by the evening hundreds of people came out for a vigil to mourn her and urge the public to resist immigration enforcement. Some then chanted as they marched through the city, but there was no violence.

“I would love for ICE to leave our city and for more community members to come to see it happens,” said Sander Kolodziej, a painter who came to the vigil to support the community.

The videos of the shooting show an officer approaching an SUV stopped across the middle of the road, demanding the driver open the door and grabbing the handle. The Honda Pilot begins to pull forward, and a different ICE officer standing in front of it pulls his weapon and immediately fires at least two shots at close range, jumping back as the vehicle moves toward him.

It is not clear from the videos if the vehicle makes contact with the officer, and there is no indication of whether the woman had interactions with ICE agents earlier. After the shooting the SUV speeds into two cars parked on a curb before crashing to a stop.

In another recording made afterward, a woman who identifies Macklin Good as her spouse is seen crying near the vehicle. The woman, who is not identified, says the couple recently arrived in Minnesota and they had a child.

Noem called the incident an “act of domestic terrorism” against ICE officers, saying the driver “attempted to run them over and rammed them with her vehicle. An officer of ours acted quickly and defensively, shot, to protect himself and the people around him.”

President Donald Trump made similar accusations on social media and defended ICE’s work.

Noem alleged that the woman was part of a “mob of agitators” and said the officer followed his training. She said the FBI would investigate.

But Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called Noem’s version of events “garbage.”

“They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense,” Frey said. “Having seen the video myself, I wanna tell everybody directly, that is bullshit.”

He also criticized the federal deployment and said the agents should leave.

The shooting marked a dramatic escalation of the latest in a series of immigration enforcement operations in major cities under the Trump administration. Wednesday’s is at least the fifth death linked to the crackdowns.

The Twin Cities have been on edge since DHS announced the operation’s launch Tuesday, at least partly tied to allegations of fraud involving Somali residents.

A crowd of protesters gathered at the scene after the shooting to vent their anger at local and federal officers.

In a scene that hearkened back to crackdowns in Los Angeles and Chicago, people chanted “ICE out of Minnesota” and blew whistles that have become ubiquitous during the operations.

Gov. Tim Walz said he was prepared to deploy the National Guard if necessary. He expressed outrage over the shooting but called on people to keep protests peaceful.

“They want a show,” Walz said. “We can’t give it to them.”

There were calls on social media to prosecute the officer who shot Macklin Good.

Commissioner Bob Jacobson of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said state authorities would investigate the shooting with federal authorities.

Chris Fahlman, 42, attended Weyburn Provincial Court Tuesday morning for his first court appearance since being denied bail in a two-day show-cause hearing at the end of November.

Fahlman is facing second-degree murder and intentionally discharging a firearm while being reckless to the life or safety of another person, related to the fatal shooting of Weyburn’s Tanya Myers on Highway 39 in September.

He appeared via video alongside his counsel Sharon Fox, who revealed discussions about setting a preliminary inquiry date have already begun. This would determine if there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. She noted the Crown estimates the inquiry could take up to seven or eight days.

Once a date is set for the preliminary hearing, Fox aims to set a case management meeting with the prosecution saying she does not want the matter to be delayed and see multiple adjournments while they attempt to set dates and move the proceedings along. Fox anticipates the hearing will need to be set months in advance.

Judge David Chow agreed with Fox, saying he wants the matter to proceed efficiently as well. He instructed defense and the Crown to make arrangements for a preliminary hearing to ensure the courtroom and needed personnel are available.

Fahlman remains in custody and will next appear in Weyburn Provincial Court by video on Dec. 18.

Remembering Tanya Myers

Andrea Morrice has since identified herself as the driver of the vehicle and Myers friend.

“It feels like I’ve been shot,” Morrice recalled Myers saying.

RCMP have confirmed that another vehicle was struck by gunfire during the same incident.

In a statement from Myers family, Tanya was described as an “amazing healer” who had a fondness of cats.

“She was the best mom to her nine cats. She rarely left home because she had an extensive care routine for her kitties. So this day out of town was rare for her,” said the family’s statement.

The family said Myers death would leave a gaping hole in their lives and the lives of her cats.

Fahlman was arrested on Gordon Road in Regina nearly two months after police began investigating Myers death at the beginning of November.

The Crown dropped manslaughter and three gun-related charges related to Fahlman last week, and laid the current charges he’s facing now.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Afghan national who worked with the CIA in his native country and immigrated to the U.S. in 2021 drove from Washington state to shoot two West Virginia National Guard members deployed in Washington, D.C., just blocks from the White House, U.S. officials said Thursday.

The suspect had worked in a special CIA-backed Afghan Army unit before emigrating from Afghanistan, according to two sources who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, and #AfghanEvac, a group that helps resettle Afghans who assisted the U.S. during the two-decade war.

Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, declined to provide a motive for Wednesday afternoon’s brazen act of violence, which comes as the presence of troops in the nation’s capital and other cities around the country has become a political flashpoint.

Pirro identified the guard members at a news conference as Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24. Both remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Pirro said that the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, launched an “ambush-style” attack with a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver. The suspect currently faces charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. Pirro said that “it’s too soon to say” what the suspect’s motives were.

The charges could be upgraded, Pirro said, adding: “We are praying that they survive and that the highest charge will not have to be murder in the first degree. But make no mistake, if they do not, that will certainly be the charge.”

The rare shooting of National Guard members on American soil, on the eve of Thanksgiving, comes amid court fights and a broader public policy debate about the Trump administration’s use of the military to combat what officials cast as an out-of-control crime problem.

The Trump administration quickly ordered 500 more National Guard members to Washington.

The suspect who was in custody also was shot and had wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

Suspect worked with CIA during Afghanistan War

A resident of the eastern Afghan province of Khost who identified himself as Lakanwal’s cousin said Lakanwal was originally from the province and that he and his brother had worked in a special Afghan Army unit known as Zero Units in the southern province of Kandahar. A former official from the unit, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said Lakanwal was a team leader and his brother was a platoon leader.

The cousin spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. He said he had last spoken to Lakanwal about six months ago. He said both brothers had moved to the United States in 2021. He said Lakanwal had started out working as a security guard for the unit in 2012, and was later promoted to become a team leader and a GPS specialist.

Zero Units were paramilitary units manned by Afghans but backed by the CIA and also served in front-line fighting with CIA paramilitary officers. Activists had attributed abuses to the units. They played a key role in the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from the country, providing security around Kabul International Airport as the Americans and others fell back during the Taliban offensive that seized the country.

A former official of 03 Unit, one of the Zero Units, said Lakanwal and his brother had both served in 03, which was stationed in Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan, in the year before the Taliban takeover. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said Lakanwal was a team leader and his brother was a platoon leader.

Lakanwal, 29, entered the U.S. in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a Biden administration program that evacuated and resettled tens of thousands of Afghans after the U.S. withdrawal from the country, officials said. Lakanwal applied for asylum during the Biden administration, but his asylum was approved under the Trump administration, #AfghanEvac said in a statement.

The initiative brought roughly 76,000 people to the U.S., many of whom had worked alongside U.S. troops and diplomats as interpreters and translators. It has since faced intense scrutiny from Trump and his allies, congressional Republicans and some government watchdogs over allegations of gaps in the vetting process and the speed of admissions, even as advocates say there was extensive vetting and the program offered a lifeline to people at risk of Taliban reprisals.

Lakanwal has been living in Bellingham, Washington, about 79 miles (127 kilometers) north of Seattle, with his wife and five children, said his former landlord, Kristina Widman.

Prior to his 2021 arrival in the United States, the suspect worked with the U.S. government, including the CIA, “as a member of a partner force in Kandahar,” John Ratcliffe, the spy agency’s director, said in a statement. He did not specify what work Lakanwal did, but said the relationship “ended shortly following the chaotic evacuation” of U.S. servicemembers from Afghanistan.

Kandahar in southern Afghanistan is in the Taliban heartland of the country. It saw fierce fighting between the Taliban and NATO forces after the U.S.-led invasion in 2001 following the al-Qaida attacks on Sept. 11. The CIA relied on Afghan staff for translation, administrative and front-line fighting with their own paramilitary officers in the war.

Wednesday night, in a video message released on social media, President Donald Trump called for the reinvestigation of all Afghan refugees who entered under the Biden administration.

“If they can’t love our country, we don’t want them,” he said, adding that the shooting was “a crime against our entire nation.”

Attack being investigated as terrorist act

FBI Director Kash Patel said the shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism. Agents have served a series of search warrants, with Patel calling it a “coast-to-coast investigation.”

Pirro said: “We have been in constant contact with their families and have provided them with every resource needed during this difficult time.”

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser interpreted the shooting as a direct assault on America itself, rather than specifically on Trump’s policies.

“Somebody drove across the country and came to Washington, D.C., to attack America,” Bowser said. “That person will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

The reasoning of Morris’ decision is covered under a publication ban, as were all the details and evidence presented during the hearing.

The ruling comes a week after Morris reserved his decision to review evidence and proceedings from the two-day long bail hearing.

Fahlman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to 44-year-old Tanya Myers death.

He is also facing a charge of intentionally discharging a firearm while being reckless to the safety of another person.

Fahlman sat stoic, occasionally furrowing his brow and shaking his head, during the two days of court proceedings.

More than a dozen people in the gallery wiped away tears during certain parts of the court proceedings.

RCMP said that Myers was travelling as a passenger in an SUV when she was shot and killed on Highway 39 northwest of Weyburn, in September.

“Investigation determined that an unknown individual or individuals discharged a firearm, striking a residence,” the Saskatchewan RCMP said in a statement.

“The occupants of the residence did not report physical injuries to police.”

Police asked anyone with information that could help further the investigation to contact the Saskatchewan RCMP or make an anonymous report through Crime Stoppers.

A number of homes around Saskatchewan have been struck by gunfire in recent months, leading to at least one serious injury.

In Regina, an 11-year-old girl was seriously hurt after shots were fired at a home on Edgar Street on Aug. 11.

A home on Ephinstone Street in Regina and two nearby vehicles were struck by gunfire on Sept. 29. No injuries were reported, but one of the vehicles was occupied when it was struck by the gunfire.

“At this time, it is not clear where the shots originated from,” the Regina Police Service said in a statement.

On Oct. 22, police in Saskatoon said shots were fired at a home on Avenue C North.

“Upon arrival, officers determined that a firearm had been discharged multiple times towards a residence. Further investigation located spent and unspent casings in the yard of the residence,” the Saskatoon Police Service said in a statement.

“The suspects had fled the area prior to police arrival.”

A police spokesperson told 650 CKOM the home was occupied at the time of the shooting, but no injuries were reported.
