Tim Nickel was still a little shaken about an hour-and-a-half after pulling a Moose Jaw woman out of her burning home.
Nickel was first on the scene of the fire that ravaged the property in Moose Jaw’s Trans Canada Trailer Court Monday.
“I was walking out from my place and I saw smoke coming out of (her) trailer,” said Nickel. “So I went closer to the trailer and I heard ‘Help me, help me’.”
Nickel then went inside.
“I couldn’t see anything, just totally black smoke. So I just reached in … fishing around … and I just felt someone on the shoulder and I dragged her out … of the trailer.”
Nickel took the woman and, with the assistance of another neighbour, did his best to care for the victim until emergency crews arrived. She was subsequently taken to Regina hospital by STARS air ambulance.
Sadly, by Tuesday afternoon the 65-year-old woman had succumbed to her injuries.
Norm Hales of the Moose Jaw Fire Department says the woman was badly burned, but was coherent enough to tell them what happened.
“There was one patient inside that a neighbour was able to pull out of the trailer. She said that she had turned on a light and there was an explosion,” he explained.
SaskEnergy says they have ruled out an underground gas leak but they’re still working with fire investigators to determine the cause.
