Fifteen inmates have been moved to other facilities in the province after a disturbance at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre.
The incident began around 11 p.m. Tuesday in a dorm unit housing 30 offenders.
“The centre management took action and they called in the emergency response team, which is our staff, to try to calm down the situation,” executive director of corporate affairs for the Ministry of Justice, Drew Wilby said.
Saskatoon police, fire, and ambulance were also called and put on standby.
“Pepper spray was needed to stop the action that was going on there,” Wilby said.
Wilby said the disturbance ended peacefully and there were no injuries to staff or inmates. The decision was made to move eight offenders to Regina Provincial Correctional Centre and seven to the Prince Albert Provincial Correctional Centre first thing the next morning.
“The Saskatoon Police Service is dealing with some others in determining whether charges need to be laid against them as a result of what happened,” Wilby said. “We will do an internal investigation on that to determine what exactly was the cause and what can be learned from that moving forward.”
Dorm living situations are for low-risk offenders.
