Despite crime statistics putting Regina among the highest for crimes per capita and their severity, people in the city tell News Talk Radio they still feel safe.
StatsCan put out their most recent figures from 2014 on Wednesday, which showed the Queen City was second among Canadian cities for crime rate and the Crime Severity Index (CSI).
To some, those numbers don’t mean a whole lot.
“I don’t really put much stock in things like that,” said one man in the city’s downtown.
Some might consider that a surprising reaction, considering the Cathedral resident is a victim of crime.
“I’ve been mugged near where I live. I don’t love it any less or think that it’s any more or less dangerous. I just don’t think it’s easy to capture in one number or one position ranking.”
Others feel fine because they know which areas to avoid and when to avoid them. Many explain how they’ll only come downtown during the day.
Some tend to avoid neighbourhoods altogether, like North Central.
However, a couple who just called themselves simply Jesse and Nicole have been living in North Central for 25 years and dispute that the area is dangerous.
“I find that this neighbourhood is one of the safest places to be,” insisted Jesse.
“I sleep with my door open most times,” admitted Nicole.
They don’t deny the notorious area has its share of problems, but maintain if you stay out of trouble, you won’t invite trouble.
“If you mind your own business, nobody bothers you. I never had problems and that’s because I don’t make problems. Plain and simple,” said Jesse.
