Food helps fill crowds at Saskatoon Ex

Spinning and flipping rides are not the only thing bringing people out to the Saskatoon Exhibition. A lot of people come with an empty stomach ready to test out the numerous food stalls serving up some favourite items. 

“I got a Spudnut,” Chris Draeger said. “It’s one of those things you can only get here and you can’t get any other time of the year. So, I always make sure to pick up at least one.”

While many people wait in line for rides, Casandra Davidson was more than happy to wait for her fair favourite, mini donuts. 

“They have a flavour in them that’s just so good you can’t resist,” she said.

Davidson was sampling the sweet treat with Nikole Sather, who was much more excited about the next stop on their Ex food tour. 

“Pretzels are the best,” she said. “And they are cheap.”

Another food stall saw a salivating line as the smell of smoked meat wafted into the air. 

“Right now I got smoked turkey legs going on,” Martin Cowan said as he slowly flipped each leg at the Smoke Turkey Leg stall. ” We are smoking them with pine, birch, and maple. We are just heating them all up and getting them all ready for people to eat.”

It’s the third year the turkey legs have been filling stomachs at the Ex and Cowan said it keeps getting busier. He added it might be because it’s pretty tempting watching someone else eat them.

“We do it caveman style here. You hold it with one hand and you eat it,” he said with a laugh.

Organizers of the Saskatoon Ex said by Friday evening more than 117,900 people had taken in the event. Friday’s attendance alone was up 10.7 per cent from the same day in 2014.

Burton Cummings will hit the Grandstand stage Saturday night at 8:30 p.m.
