Saskatchewan Science Centre visitors go to Arctic on hottest summer days

Parents and kids in Regina are choosing to escape the heat this week by taking a trip to the Arctic when they step inside the Saskatchewan Science Centre.

“Our Arctic Voices visiting exhibition is here right now and we also have an IMAX film called To the Arctic which is in 3D,” said Ryan Holota, the director of business development and visitor services at the Saskatchewan Science Centre.

“Both of those are kind of ways to get yourself out of the heat and into our air conditioned space and explore a little bit of Canada’s north.”

On a hot August day, the Science Centre is a very popular spot for daycares and day camps. Kaitlin Stadnyck says it’s a perfect way to beat the heat with kids.

“We haven’t been able to get outside much in the afternoon so this is a good way for them to get their exercise, be physical and be able to stay inside out of the sun,” she said.

The exhibit features models of polar bear skulls and whale bones plus an interactive game where kids can jump like arctic animals.

“It’s too hot for my little guys. They’re all four and under so the heat is too bad today so we’ll come and do something fun and see something different,” said one mom as her little boys explored the polar bear cave.

She says it’s a great opportunity to keep them entertained and out of the sun.

“It keeps them entertained with something different rather than just being at home and watching TV or something,” she said. “They’re active, they’re learning and you’re still in the air conditioning, you’re still out of the sun.”

When the temperature climbs above 30 C , many people choose to go to air conditioned movie theatres. The IMAX theatre is the only place in the city where you can go ‘To the Arctic’ in 3D. You can check out times for the film at the Saskatchewan Science Centre website.
