Dramatic horse rescue near Martensville after animal falls in old well

Daisy the horse is finally safe after a dramatic rescue from an old well near Martensville.

Russ Thiessen said his son was checking on their horses on Wednesday but Daisy was missing.

He eventually spotted her head in the pasture but he thought she was lying down. Once he got closer, he realized Daisy’s hind legs were stuck in a hole so he called his father.

“What! What kind of hole is there in the middle of the pasture?” Thiessen questioned his son over the phone.

Thiessen figures the well had been dug decades ago and since covered up. He said the horses graze there all the time and the family quads in the area as well.

“I guess because of all the rain it just kind of sunk in and she happened to be there at the wrong time. She fell with her back end into the big ‘ol well,” Thiessen explained on The Brent Loucks Show.

Thiessen’s wife, who was returning home from Costco with him, called Brad’s Towing to help rescue the 1,600-pound horse. They also called a veterinarian who sedated Daisy and gave her painkillers.

Neighbours and friends also came over to help.

Thiessen said within 15 minutes, Daisy was able to walk back to the corral with only a little bruising and dehydration.
