The City of Saskatoon is rolling out the next phase of its smart meter program, which should start affecting customers’ water and power bills by mid-2016.
Saskatoon Light and Power (SL&P) crews have been steadily replacing the older-style meters with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters since 2008.
Over the next three months, 42 data collectors and 20 data repeaters will be installed around the city. These devices wirelessly collect and relay data from the AMI meters in homes to the central management system at city hall, effectively making the smart meters “smart”.
The goal is to have all SL&P and Saskatoon Water customers paying for their actual power and water usage instead estimated usage.
Most power meters are expected to be converted by the end of 2017. AMI-compatible water meters will start being installed this fall, with most of them converted by the end of 2020.
Monthly meter readings will start showing up on customer’s bills, and meter readers will no longer have to visit individual homes to take them.
The city stresses that the brand of smart meter they’re installing is different from the one that SaskPower was forced to remove from thousands of homes last year.
