As of January, when a Leader-Post newspaper shows up on Regina doorsteps, it will have come all the way from Saskatoon.
On Tuesday, Postmedia announced it would be ending the printing of the paper in Regina and moving those operations to Saskatoon.
According to Phyllise Gelsan, vice-president of communications for Postmedia, the presses in Regina are very old.
“Updating printing equipment is extremely expensive and so, of course the analysis was done, we look at these things very closely especially when it affects our people, and with declining circulation and the cost of updating old iron equipment, it just makes more sense for us to do it this way.”
She said it won’t affect when subscribers’ papers are delivered.
Sixteen people will lose their jobs in the press room. Unifor is the union which represents those workers.
“(We’re) pretty disappointed about it. That’s 16 folks, members of Unifor, good paying jobs in the city of Regina, that will be looking for jobs in the new year,” said Dan Bailey, national representative with Unifor.
Bailey said the union heard about the decision Tuesday morning in a meeting with Postmedia, and has been meeting with its membership since. Future plans, like severance packages or new opportunities, will be negotiated.
