The Saskatoon Blades scored four in a third-period comeback Sunday over Swift Current to avoid a weekend sweep.
The Blades opened a two-game home-and-home series with the Broncos Friday at SaskTel Centre where the Blades fell behind early when Swift Current’s Jordan Thomson beat the Blades’ Jake Morrissey seven minutes into the first period.
The Broncos added three second period markers from Glenn Gawdin, Cavin Leth and Scott Feser. Jon Martin added a fifth goal in the third, while goaltender Landon Bow shut the door on Saskatoon for his first shutout of the season.
With a day off between games a rested Blades’ squad took the ice Sunday for game two, but once again Saskatoon fell behind early giving up two first period goals. The Blades clawed their way back to even the score with goals from Nick Zajac and Logan Christensen. Jon Martin scored his second of the game and third of the series late in the second, giving Swift Current a 3-2 edge heading into the third.
The Blades refused to lose two in a row to Swift Current and came out strong in the final 20 minutes with goals from Zajac, Connor Gay, Cameron Hebig and Cameron Hausinger.
Saskatoon’s record improves to 3-4 after splitting the series with Swift Current.
The Blades return to action Saturday against the Brandon Wheat Kings (4-3) at SaskTel Centre.
