Bless us baseball ‘gods’ for we want a win. A Regina bartender has his own version of ‘holy water’ that he uses to bless Blue Jays fans.
Piper Burns says his dad was a big sports fan, but he only started getting into Blue Jays baseball about three years ago and this is the first time it’s paying off.
On game days you can find Burns working at Leopold’s Tavern, and cheering on the Blue Jays with a crowd of fans. But he also puts his own twist on sports superstition with a glass of blue brew he calls ‘holy water.’
“It’s a secret but it involves some ritual, some chanting, some Leo’s special draft (which is on special during the games), and then just a little bit of magic touch,” Burns explained.
He says he breaks out the water for ‘blessings’ in times of crisis when fans were losing hope.
“They understand the severity of the situation so they usually let me ‘bless’ them and there has not been many people who have said no, other than some Yankees fans once in a while,” Burns said with a laugh. “It’ll actually burn their skin if I touch them with it, so it’s for their safety and they let me know.”
He says it worked with the Jays winning two games in a row after losing the first two games of the five-game series against the Texas Rangers.
