It is the longest-consecutive-running food drive in Canada; the Regina Food Bank’s 29th annual food drive kicked off Oct. 5 and is about to wrap up.
Grocery bags were delivered with the local newspaper last weekend. The intention is for people to fill those with non-perishable items like pasta, canned foods, powered milk, pork and beans, and peanut butter. Place it on your doorstep Saturday morning and volunteers will pick it up between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. If it has not been picked up by then, call 306-205-FOOD and someone will get it by 4:30 p.m.
If you are not able to donate the items above, do not worry.
“There’s no such thing as an unappreciated donation at our end,” explained CEO of the Regina Food Bank Steve Compton.
Compton tells News Talk Radio the food drive started as an initiative of the girl guides and the boy scouts. The tradition is continuing all these years later.
“Here we are 29 years later and the community still responds. It’s pretty outstanding.”
The goal this year is to collect 300 tonnes of food — which would match what was donated last year.
“It will last us into, you know, those long months of winter after the holiday season.
“We’re starting to see more people come in here for the first time, new faces that we haven’t seen before, so, you know, the need will be there and we hope that through the generosity of the community we can respond to it,” said Compton.
The food bank helps feed about 200 to 250 households per day or 8,700 requests per month.
