As of Wednesday, Saskatchewan’s teachers can now police themselves.
A new board, the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board, has taken over certification, registration, and discipline of teachers in Saskatchewan.
The nine-person board of directors is made up of seven teachers and two members of the public.
In a news release, Education Minister Don Morgan said the board will give teachers the autonomy to self-regulate, like other professions in Saskatchewan.
“We believe that the knowledge and experience that our teachers possess will help create a more transparent and clear process that will build on the hard work of our education partners, continue to safeguard our students and protect the integrity and professionalism of teachers.”
Discipline has previously been dealt with by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation. Certification had been done by the Ministry of Education. Registration is a new requirement for employment by a publicly-funded school division in Saskatchewan.
Trevor Smith, formerly with the Ministry of Education, will officially become the COO, and chair of the board on Nov. 1. He had been in that position in an interim capacity.
