Shouting and laughing children ran around the third flood of the Science Centre in Regina on Wednesday morning, getting the first crack at the newest permanent exhibit.
It’s called Building Connections and is a partnership between the centre, SaskPower, and Homes by Dream.
Visitors will learn about electricity and reducing their own power consumption, home building techniques and materials, and communities are designed.
Sandy Baumgartner, CEO of the Science Centre, said the exhibit has been two years in the making.
She said it started with another home they had in an exhibit about climate change.
“It was so well worn, we knew we needed a new house, because I could come here any day of the week and there was always kids playing with that.”
The centre partnered up with the Regina Homebuilders’ Association. SaskPower got into the mix because Baumgartner said, the Crown Corp wanted to something with energy conservation. Homes by Dream came into the mix for the community planning aspects of the exhibit.
The activities vary from a 200 sq. ft. house on which you can finish the siding, roofing, and brickwork. A huge hamster wheel on which you can walk or run to generate enough electricity to power a TV, and a giant grid where you can create your own community while balancing its needs, like electricity.
