Sask. premier heading to Paris for climate change summit in December

Saskatchewan’s premier will soon head to the land of baguettes, cheese and the Eiffel Tower.

Brad Wall is going to Paris, France in early December for the International Climate Change Summit. There, he’ll join what he believes will be many other premiers from across the country, along with prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau.

“We want to make sure that whatever Canada is committing to doesn’t kneecap our economy in the west,” Wall outlined. “I want Saskatchewan’s voice to be there when maybe some pretty important decisions are being made that’ll affect consumers and job creators here in Saskatchewan.”

Wall indicated improving the environment is of key importance, but a balance has to be struck that ensures jobs aren’t lost and the economy doesn’t suffer as a result.

He pointed out that by a measure of intensity, greenhouse gas emissions are coming down in the province. However, Saskatchewan is still a high emitter, relying on coal, oil and gas.

The summit also serves as a good opportunity to show off the province’s carbon capture and storage technology to other countries Wall added.
