“This is an exact scenario of what travel insurance is designed for,” said Terry MacDonald at CAA Saskatchewan.
She is looking at the possible plight for travelers now in Pacific coast resorts in Mexico – Puerto Vallarta down to Manzanillo. That is the area under threat from the massive Hurricane Patricia. She says people who purchase travel insurance most often think about the need for medical insurance – which is crucial. But many policies also include trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.
People with the latter coverage are able to tap into help should they find themselves in a difficult situation, including those caused by a huge weather event like a hurricane.
“We want to make sure that our travelers are safe,” she said. “We want to get them to a place where they have fresh water, food and accommodations.”
She also says trip cancellation insurance could protect anyone booked for Mexican Pacific resorts later in the winter, if they are seriously damaged.
