Mayor Michael Fougere doesn’t see a future for compassion clubs in Regina until the federal laws regarding marijuana are changed.
Pat Warnecke has told News Talk Radio that he plans on speaking to Regina city council about opening one of the compassion clubs to provide patients with medical marijuana. Warnecke says he plans to proceed despite the raid of the Saskatchewan Compassion Club in Saskatoon last week.
Speaking to the CJME Morning Show on Tuesday, Fougere said he feels it’s important for Regina police to not be selective in enforcing the law.
“That’d be up for the police service to determine whether to enforce the law because that kind of activity in Saskatoon – and Regina – is, the law says you can’t do that.”
Fougere admitted he hasn’t spoken with other mayors about the issue as it’s not as much of a municipal issue as it is a policing issue.
The mayor says there is no application currently before the city, adding that the city only looks at an application for its land use, not for what will operate inside.
