A man and a woman are recovering from gunshot wounds after separate shootings on South Albert Street in Regina late Sunday night.
Shortly before midnight a 33-year-old woman was rushed to hospital after being shot at the Pizza Hut on the 4500 block of Albert Street. Police say she was an employee of the business.
Regina police did not name the business, but people who work in the area told News Talk Radio it happened at the Pizza Hut. The store was open as usual on Monday morning, but there is a small hole near the glass door of the store.
The woman was taken to hospital and is expected to be OK. Police believe that shooting happened around 11:20 p.m.
About 15 minutes later at 11:56 p.m. a 23-year-old man was taken to the hospital after being shot in the parking lot of the McDonalds a block away from the first shooting. Police say he was a customer. Again, police did not name the business, but an employee confirmed it happened in the parking lot
The young man is also expected to be OK.
Regina police say due to the close proximity and timing of the shootings, they may be related. There did not appear to be an intention to rob the victims.
“Indeed these are what may be random acts of violence against innocent people in our community,” said police Chief Troy Hagen.
Investigators are also drawing a potential link to two other shootings in the same neighbourhood on Thursday. Gunfire caused damage to the window of a business in the same block of Albert Street at 12:50 a.m.on Nov. 12. About half an hour later, at 1:18 a.m., another window was broken by a shot at a home on the 2400 block of Gordon Road. No one was hurt in either of those incidents.
Police believe the weapon is a low-calibre firearm. At this point, investigators do not have a motive or any suspects for these shootings.
“We do not have any eyewitnesses. The victims themselves did not unfortunately see who or how many people may have been responsible for this, whether they’re in a vehicle or not, we do not know,” Hagen explained.
The lack of evidence and eyewitnesses is one reason why police are asking the public to report any kind of suspicious activity in that area.
“We’re asking people to be vigilant, to report any suspicious activity that they may see,” Hagen said.
Investigators are looking through surveillance video from nearby businesses and police patrols have been increased in the area.
