A set of stunning violins will decorate the City of Saskatoon as the local symphony celebrates its 85th birthday this weekend.
“They’re going to be on display this Saturday and throughout the city during the year like at the aiport, Wanuskewin Heritage Park and all around town,” said Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (SSO) conductor Eric Paetkau.
The SSO will play a free concert at the Sid Buckwold Theatre at TCU Place on Saturday for orchestra donors, meaning there are no tickets available for the special gala event.
The head-turning violins on display in the lobby before they’re scattered around Saskatoon.
“There’s different carvings on some of them, few of the artists made special stands, there’s a whole variety, completely different in every way, really fun to have that diversity,” Paetkau said.
The orchestra invited local artists to decorate the violins, many which have been out of commission for years.
At 85 years, the SSO is the fifth-oldest orchestra in Canada and Saskatoon’s oldest arts organization.
