Suspect in Alberta triple murder believed to be related to 2 victims

Some details are emerging about the young man believed to be responsible for the murders of three people in small Alberta community, and how he knew his alleged victims.

On Tuesday, RCMP shot Mickell Clayton Bailey, 19, while trying to arrest him in Peers, AB at a location close to where the bodies of three people were found on the weekend.

Crime bureau chief of the Edmonton Journal, Jana Pruden, was in the community when the arrest happened.

“What happened (Tuesday) is the woman’s nephew – and the cousin of the teenage girl – was arrested and charged with three counts of murder. Two counts of first-degree murder – one for each of the women – and second-degree murder for the man,” Prudent told the CJME Morning Show Wednesday.

Mounties found the bodies of Roxanne Berube, 36, another female and Daniel Miller on Sunday in the home they shared near Edson, just over 200 kilometres west of Edmonton. Police have not released the name of the second female, but friends and family on Facebook identified her as Berube’s teenage daughter.

Pruden said that Bailey is Berube’s ex-husband’s sister’s son.

Pruden explained that the small community is not only shocked by the murders, but by the fact that someone in the hamlet is believed to be responsible for it.

“You can imagine the community the size of Peers … that whole area is pretty sparsley populated, so people are very closely knit.”

Mounties were able to find Bailey quickly. Pruden said he may have been identified as a suspect as early as Monday.

Bailey was taken to hospital after being shot with what Mounties called “serious injuries”.
