Charges are expected to be laid after an unlicenced driver struck two people on a grid road near Balcarres Saturday morning, killing one of them.
RCMP were called to the Peepeekisis First Nation early Saturday morning. Police say a couple were standing beside their vehicle, which was left running with the high beams on.
A man driving a passing vehicle was blinded by the headlights. Mounties say by the time the driver saw the couple, he was unable to avoid hitting them due to the slippery road.
Joy Deborah Desnomie, 43, of the Peepeekisis First Nation was pronounced dead at Fort Qu’Appelle’s All Nations Healing Hospital. Her common-law husband, Michel Beaulieu, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Mounties say alcohol wasn’t a factor in the crash, but the vehicle was unregistered and the driver didn’t have a licence.
RCMP expect to lay charges against 21-year-old Michael Anthony Akapew.
