Safety concerns remain as construction begins on White City overpass

Construction has now officially begun at the White City portion of the Regina Bypass.

The construction was officially kicked off Wednesday for what will eventually link Highway 1 with Highway 48. It is the first of many overpasses that will mark that stretch of Highway 1 east of Regina. But it isn’t enough for one grieving mother.
 
Wanda Campbell lost her son Lane Ashton at the Pilot Butte turning. Six people have died there.
 
Campbell wants Lane remembered by more than just flowers at the side of the road.
 
“For me, I don’t want anyone else to go through what I have gone through. We still advocate for lights at that intersection and that area.”
 
The White City overpass at Highway 48 won’t be completed until 2017, the Pilot Butte one even further yet, in 2019.
 
Until then Campbell maintains safety must be improved.
 
“If you took the Lewvan and you took all the traffic lights out and you tried to cross it, that would be insane. It is almost the same, the same volume of traffic and now the same speed.”
 
Currently speed has been reduced to 80 kilometres per hour in the hopes of reducing the number of collisions.
 
The Regina Bypass won’t be complete until 2019.
