The City of Saskatoon is set to pay damages stemming from the 2014 transit lockout.
In October 2014, the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board found that a two-week portion of the lockout was illegal. The decision came on the grounds that the lockout was declared before the board could resolve a separate grievance filed by the union over the treatment of a bus driver.
The board ordered the city to pay compensation to members of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) local 615 for money lost during that period.
On Thursday, the city announced it would be paying out $651,000, with payments expected to reach workers by mid-February.
The city noted that money for the payout was set aside in the 2014 budget year. As such, it won’t impact either the 2015 or 2016 budgets.
The city reported that ongoing talks with the transit union have still not yielded a new contract.
