A Regina man is warning others that the so-called “white van scam” is back after he was duped by an apparent salesman.
In the scam, you are contacted in a parking lot by someone in a van who says he has to sell a home theatre system at an unbelievable price, accompanied by a story of why he must sell the electronics which he assures you are not stolen.
One Regina man – who does not want his name used – was approached in Harbour Landing this week.
“So he showed me it,” he said. “You could see a retail price on the box of $2,700 bucks.”
He said the guy seemed legitimate, and was willing to sell the home theater sound system for $300.
The system turned out to be highly inferior, worth maybe $50.
The Regina Police Service says the scam may not be illegal, but it is certainly a case of buyer beware.
