A father from Saskatoon will be heading to Helsinki for the World Junior Hockey Championship, but not just as a fan.
Marc Chartier’s 19-year-old son Rourke made the Canadian Junior Hockey Team after battling back from a broken wrist. He was out for two months with the injury and was luckily able to squeeze in a few games before the national team tryouts, Chartier said.
“For himself, I think it’s something that he’s worked hard for. I mean, it’s for him,” Chartier said, adding he found out his son had made the team through a text message from Rourke.
“I just congratulated him. I mean, you want to play for your country. It’s a great opportunity.”
While he’s unsure what role his son will have on the team, Chartier is excited to be in the bleachers cheering him on.
Nineteen-year-old Haydn Fleury from Carlyle is the other Saskatchewan player who made the national team.
The World Junior Championship tournament starts on Boxing Day, when Chartier, Fleury and the rest of the Canadian junior team takes on the Americans.
