Regina mayor looks forward to busy 2016

Regina’s mayor is ready for the new year which will bring the completion of the city’s new stadium and the new wastewater treatment plant, and a municipal election.

Construction of the new Mosaic Stadium is expected to be finished in August 2016. No Saskatchewan Roughriders games will be played at the new venue until the 2017 season, but Mayor Michael Fougere told the CJME Morning Show Tuesday that some “practice events” will allow the city to test the new stadium.

“We’ve had some discussions internally and what we want to be able to do is to test the stadium before we get the keys – so to speak,” Fougere said. Some of the test events will only house 25 per cent of the stadium’s capacity, then 50 per cent and 75 per cent. Fougere said announcements should be made in the coming weeks as to what kind of concerts and football games those test events will be.

The city’s new wastewater treatment plant should completed in 2016 as well. Construction is already 75 per cent done, with the project expected to be substantially complete by December 2016.

Regina voters will go to the polls in October 2016 for the municipal election. Fougere was first elected as city councillor in Regina in 1997. Elected mayor in 2012, he told the morning show that he’ll once again be running in the election.
