Losing weight and getting fit is a common goal many will set as their resolution this new year’s; unfortunately most will give up before they even begin to see results.
While it entails some hard work and determination, 4 Horsemen Fitness personal trainer Jenn Fehr said the best way to avoid failure is to make sure fitness goals are realistic.
“Sometimes people have these huge goals and they expect them to happen really quickly. But you have to work at those goals and sometime they come a little bit slower then what people want,” she said. “It is just a matter of saying ‘okay this is a new year’s resolution goal so I need to stick it with from January until the end of the year not from January until March.’”
Fehr said sometimes all it takes is a bit of guidance from a personal trainer to help ensure your fitness goals can be met.
Lindsay Wilkinson, exercise therapist at Summit Physiotherapy and Fitness in Prince Albert, gave similar advice. She said the biggest thing that they try to tell their clients is to make smart and smaller goals that you know you can obtain.
“Don’t just look at the finish line but at every step to get there,” she said. “Figure out your starting point and where you want to be in a week. You don’t want to think about that bikini for summer right away, just get started with something, even if it just going for a walk or including 20 minutes a day of some sort of exercise.”
Wilkinson said the first step to becoming healthy is taking action to make it happen.
“It’s just a matter of laying everything out that they want to see happen,” she said.
