A young girl has succumbed to her injuries, making her the fourth person to die after a crash at the intersection of Wanuskewin Road and Highway 11 early Sunday morning.
The girl’s parents and her younger brother also died in the crash. The family of four were in a Hyundai Elantra traveling westbound on Highway 11 when they were hit by a Jeep Wrangler SUV that was trying to cross the highway on Wanuskewin Road, Warman RCMP said in a release.
When police arrived on the scene they found two vehicles in the ditch on the north side of Highway 11.
The Saskatoon Fire Department had to extract the 33-year-old woman and 34-year-old man from the front seats of the Hyundai, and their five-year-old daughter and two-year-old son from the back seat. The mother and father were pronounced dead on scene while the children were taken to hospital in critical condition.
The boy died of his injuries in hospital.
On Monday morning, a source close to the family confirmed to News Talk Radio that the girl had also died Sunday morning.
The 49-year-old woman who was driving the SUV was taken to hospital but released soon after. She was then arrested by police. Late Sunday night, RCMP announced that Catherine Loye McKay of Saskatoon has been charged with three counts of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death.
The westbound lane of Highway 11 is closed and traffic is being diverted around the area while police investigate.
The name of the family members who died will not be released at this time, RCMP said.
The intersection, located on the outskirts of Saskatoon, is notorious for collisions and deaths. Temporary speed limit signs for construction have lowered how fast cars can go on the small section of road from 110 km/h to 60 km/h.
