Crime Stoppers Regina receives record number of tips in 2015

More people picked up the phone to give a tip about a crime in 2015 in Regina than in any other year.

A record-setting 1,028 tips were received by Crime Stoppers Regina.

Laurie Norman, president of the group, said she’s impressed and proud of the record. She attributed the rise in tips to the increase in promotion of Crime Stoppers they’ve been doing, but also, perhaps, a rise in civic responsibility.

“I wonder whether there’s just sort of, as a result of some of the global situation, but the people seem to be more interested in getting involved in caring about others in the community.”

Regina police Chief Troy Hagen called the program’s year in 2015 a remarkable success. He said the record number of tips shows that people have trust and confidence in the program.

“They have confidence in the program, and that’s incredibly important. They obviously have a belief that the information they’re sending to us will be acted upon. They obviously have a high degree of confidence that, indeed, they will remain anonymous.”

Hagen said they follow up on every tip that comes in.

Seventeen arrests were made in 2015, 19 cases were cleared, and $4,535 were given away in rewards.
