Demolition begins to make way for Regina's International Trade Centre

It’s the beginning of the end for over a dozen aging barns and buildings on the grounds of Evraz Place in Regina.

The first swing of a track hoe Thursday signified the start of demolition on a total of 14 old buildings in disrepair, all to eventually make way for the new $37-million International Trade Centre.

“It’s a very future-forward-looking activity that we’re undertaking today,” said Mark Allan, Evraz Place CEO. “We’re looking very much forward to a shiny new building.”

This is the first phase of a four-part plan to wipe the slate clean with the historical buildings and replace them with the 150,000 sq. ft., two-level centre.

“There really has been no market for call it ‘old barns’ for many years other than for Agribition once a year,” Allan said.

He believes the multi-million dollar complex will allow them to attract and bid on new trade and consumer shows.

It’ll also compliment existing shows.

“This new facility is going to be excellent for us and really allows us to take Agribition to the next level,” explained Agribition president Stewart Stone.

Before the event happens this November, the plan is to demolish 10.5 of the 14 buildings so that Agribition can still utilize some space. Coinciding with that, construction on the new centre will being in the spring of 2016.

Agribition 2016 will therefore have a mix of old and new space to use for exhibitors and attendees. When the event finishes, the remaining buildings will come down.

The facility is scheduled to open in November 2017.

No formal plans have been made, but those with Evraz Place are also considering making the Lewvan Drive entrance into the facility larger, improving access in and out of the grounds on the west side.
