HBO announced Game of Thrones season six is set to premiere April 24, 2016, a little later than its usual early-March to mid-April return date, but the show is keeping its Sunday primetime slot.
The news comes shortly after author George R.R. Martin admitted he wasn’t going to have the next novel in his series “A Song of Ice and Fire”, which the HBO show is based off of, in time for the new season. That means the show will be ahead of the books for the first time since the series debuted in 2011.
While fans won’t truly know what the new season brings until they watch it, entertainment reporters said the sixth season will feature the return of Bran Stark, who didn’t appear at all in season five.
In 2015, Game of Thrones set a new record at the Emmys with 24 nominations winning 12 awards including Best Drama. The West Wing held the previous record. The show also entered the “Guinness Book of World Records” as the most pirated television show in history.
