The group in Regina tasked with helping grow the city’s economy is changing its name and structure.
Economic Development Regina Inc. (ECDI) replaces the Regina Regional Opportunities Commission (RROC).
“The organization has established a new strategic plan, a new direction, and the name change just reflects better our change of focus going forward,” said CEO John Lee.
The transition is being made over to a not-for-profit with more of a public-private partnership model.
“We’re more independent and arms-length of the city which gives us an opportunity to really leverage new partnerships, new revenue sources,” he explained, comparing it to how the Regina Exhibition Association Limited operates, which is the body that runs Evraz Place.
Lee said immediate goals for the newly-named economic organization involve continuing to focus on and grow the city’s manufacturing and metal fabrication sector. He estimated that it is a $6 billion industry already, and the group is hoping to eventually push that number to $10 billion.
