Archbishop of Regina passes away after long battle with cancer

Regina’s Catholic community is mourning the loss of the city’s archbishop, who passed away Friday morning after a long battle with cancer.

Archbishop Daniel Bohan died at 6 a.m. at the Pasqua Hospital. He was 74.

He began serving as Archbishop of Regina in 2005, one of the last appointments of Pope John Paul II.

Archbishop Bohan was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. His father was in the military. He grew up in Moncton, New Brunswick the oldest of six children.

Ordained in May 1967, the archbishop served in the Maritimes for most of his life. He was appointed the Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto in May 2003, and was ordained bishop in July 2003 in his home parish in Moncton.

During his time serving Regina, Archbishop Bohan served on a number of boards and councils. As a member of the Pontifical Council, he worked on building relationships with the Sikh, Hindu and Muslim communities in Regina by presenting letters that recognized their religious days.

The archbishop’s mother, Rita, is still living, and still residing in Moncton. Also left to mourn are Archbishop Bohan’s two sisters, three brothers, numerous nephews and nieces, and the priests, archdiocesan staff and lay people of the Regina Archdiocese.

Vicar General Very Reverend Lorne Crozon will assume the duties of Archbishop of Regina until a new archbishop is appointed.
